We joined the Awful Purdies in Katie Roche’s living room to hear their newest work and share a moment of music and fellowship. Skye Carrasco shook the walls of our studio with her voice. Idris Goodwin spoke the truth. Quite a show.
Katie Burns, Nicole Upchurch, Marcy Rosenbaum, Katie Roche, and newest Purdy Sarah Cram played three songs for us while we visited them in Katie Roche’s living room. All three were relatively new ventures by the band. The first, Pennies in the Dustpan, was written by Katie Roche. She sings lead vocals on the piece and is back up by the other band members. Katie Burns takes a turn as the lead vocalist on a cover a Kate Bush’s Cloudbusting, a song they’ve only played together as a band one other time. Finally, the newest member of the band Sarah Cram brings one of her songs, Let me be the One, to the Purdies for some harmonizing. We thank the Purdies for allowing us this sneak peak into a rehearsal.
Skye Carrasco joined us in the studio to play three songs, Belly, Untitled Song, and Bee Fights. Skye talked with us about her evolution as an artist - how she found her voice and began to create her own distinctive music.
Finally, our Artist in Residence Idris Goodwin gave us the gift of an performance essay. The first in a series he will be creating for the show. Idris has the ability to make you laugh with carefully constructed wordplay- then turn in an instant to strip away any pretense and present you with an image, and idea, that gets to a powerful truth.
